Believe it or not, fashion is a huge part of the world we live in today. From fashion shows to just everyday outfits, everyone has their sense of fashion. This fashion choice, specifically for teenagers, tends to carry on into school with them. And there are many ways people show off their style. However, many schools, including Herron, require students to wear uniforms. Many students say it limits their ability to express themselves through clothing. However many students disregard this statement as they use accessories instead of clothing to express their fashion choices. So I asked Milo Pelley what they use to show off. From hats to pins, everyone has their own ways of expressing who they are. However,
What exactly do you see as an accessory?
“Usually, like, some type of necklace or purse, like, bracelets, rings, any type of jewelry. I want to say glasses, but I don’t know if that would count. Pins on, like, IDs and stuff, and then, like, stickers on them.”
Do you personally wear any accessories? If so, what do you wear?
“Yeah, but not often. I have bracelets, and then I wear some rings. Oh, yeah. My lanyard too, if that would count because it’s not the base lanyard. My purse too, if that also counts, but that’s really all I have with accessories.”
How do your accessories convey who you are?
“Most of my accessories are mainly about my music taste. Like, my purse has Lemmy from Motorhead on it. And most of my other accessories are usually stuff that I believe in. I mean, for one, I believe in witchcraft. And that’s what my necklace is. And some of my bracelets or my rings are just more for accessorizing honestly, that’s really it.”
Do you think it would be a good idea for the school to have no uniform?
“I want to say yes and no. It really depends on what the dress code would entirely be. But other than that, I would mostly say yeah.”
So while students do want to show off their closets, they still find interesting ways to share their interests and who they are. Accessories allow students to express themselves while still abiding by the uniform. So there is only one question left. Why can’t they? By that I mean why can’t students wear the clothes they want. Most schools with uniforms enact this policy to either avoid bullying or distinguish students. As for Herron, the reasoning is unclear. But that won’t and doesn’t stop students from accessorizing until the day they graduate.
