Opportunities for Young Women in Flag Football

Have you heard of Flag Football in your daily conversations? Well, maybe it’s a strong reason why. Currently, girls’ flag football is one of the fastest growing sports for young women and there’s a lot of lessons, opportunities, and fun that come with participating.

What’s Flag Football?

It’s a sport, which there’s six players on each team (quarterback, 3 wide receivers, center, running back -offense / 3 safeties, rusher, and 2 defensive backs – defense), twenty-minute halves, and a football. After these factors it comes down to the heart that each individual has for the game. Here at Herron, the heart of each Individual equals a team win and greater team chemistry. Let’s dive into the Herron Girls Flag Football Team!

Progress at Herron

In the 2024-2025 season, there wasn’t a lot of players at Herron, specifically seven girls made up the team. Herron’s, Elena Newsom won Girls Flag Football Player of the year. There are downsides of playing all game, however she didn’t let this stop her. Elena continuously got touchdowns, flag pulls, and supported the team. Leadership was shown and this one a major part of the award she was given. Congratulations, Elena Newsom!

In the 2025-2026 season, the program improved even more. The player count increased from seven to twelve. This helped an even rotation of players on the field, with each player catching a break between offense and defensive possessions. In this season, the Girls won more than half of their games with one game resulting in a tie! I myself played, and I enjoyed it a lot. The bonds I created and stronger bonds with those I’ve already knew from the past was fun! I plan on joining next season/school year and you should too!

Future for Girls Flag Football

In 2025, there was 40 NCAA teams, and a projected 60 teams in the spring. Specifically, the University of Nebraska will be the first college to add women’s flag football as a varsity sport, with beginnings in spring of 2028. With highlighting this information, flag football is a fast-growing sport for women. Girls in middle school and high school have a high opportunity to get offered at a high-level of competition. These colleges don’t need to be just Division 1, but Division 2 and 3. Therefore, flag football brings endless opportunities to young women in high school, middle school, and college.

As Herron Athletics continues to offer flag football as a sport, friendship, sportsmanship, and leadership is grown within each individual on the sidelines and on the field. Let’s Go Achaeans!

Hello, I’m Xavia Bell and a Sophomore at Herron High School. It’s my first time in yearbook and it’s been pretty fun. It’s the free range of creative writing, design, etc. that I enjoy in yearbook. I definitely recommend if anyone is looking for something new to try!
Additionally, I’m looking forward to joining the yearbook team back next year for Junior Year! It’s something at Herron for everyone; from Herron’s athletics all the way down to Clubs. It’s way more to invest in than just tests and quizzes. Yet, I enjoy math, science, and the languages classes at Herron. There’s a lot to learn and it’s fun!
I do hobbies I do at Herron, and its Flag Football and Basketball. It’s only the school’s second year at Flag Football and we’ve already made history by winning first round of Sectionals! It was by far one of the funniest things I’ve tried new throughout high school.
Besides that, Welcome to Our website!
