At Herron, students carry more than just backpacks filled with notebooks and school supplies; they carry items that reflect their personalities, emotions, routines, and even the ways they cope with daily stress. By looking at what students choose to bring with them every day, this story aims to reveal a deeper, more personal side of student life that often goes unnoticed in the classroom.
Through interviews with several students, it became clear that these “everyday carry” items range from practical necessities to meaningful and sometimes unexpected objects. For example, Harper Mason carries a chess set to use after tests when class time slows down, showing how students find ways to stay engaged or entertained during less structured moments. Elijah Angeles keeps a photo booth strip of him and his boyfriend, highlighting how sentimental items can serve as reminders of important relationships and provide comfort throughout the school day. Other students mentioned more typical items, like Aniyah Armstrong’s mascara, which reflects how personal appearance and self-confidence can play a role in a student’s daily routine.
However, not all items are predictable. Jariah Holder shared that they carry a zip-lock bag of spaghetti, an unusual but memorable example that shows how everyday carry items don’t always follow expectations and can reflect appetite, convenience, or personal habits. One of the most detailed responses came from D’Angelo Gutierrez, who listed a wide variety of items including keys, headphones, money, medication, tools, extra clothing, and even random objects like a measuring tape or sewing supplies. His explanation bringing things, “just in case”,demonstrates a mindset of preparedness and adaptability, suggesting that some students feel the need to be ready for anything their day might bring.
This story will explore several key questions: What items can students not function without? Are these items easily replaceable, or do they hold deeper meaning? And what do these choices reveal about how students navigate stress, boredom, identity, and daily responsibilities? By combining a range of student perspectives, this piece will show that something as simple as what a student carries can provide insight into their personality, priorities, and overall experience at Herron.
