Lace Up & Lock In: My Game Day Rituals

Elena Newson has a few game day rituals that she swears by, and they’ve become just as much a part of her softball routine as lacing up her cleats. Before every game, the Achaean softball team forms a big circle, clapping slowly in unison as they all move inward, building the energy and getting each other fired up. The moment ends with everyone shouting, “1, 2, 3, Achaeans!” It is a tradition that always gets Elena locked in. One of her more unique rituals started when a senior found a random stick on their field after a big storm. They spray-painted it gold as a joke, but it stuck and now Elena brings that same golden stick to every home game and kisses it before warm-ups for good luck. She’s also pretty serious about her pregame superstitions: she absolutely refuses to step on the white chalk lines before the game starts, and will not let her team do it either, no matter what. It’s one of those little things that just feels wrong if she breaks it. She also won’t set foot on the field until it’s officially time for warm-ups—no early wandering or casual throws before then. And maybe it’s just being prepared, or maybe it’s part of the ritual at this point, but she always makes sure to bring extra socks. Whether it’s for comfort, luck, or just tradition, Elena’s game day habits help her get in the right mindset. Over time, they’ve become more than just routines—they’re part of the identity she’s built as a player, and a way to carry a little bit of magic with her every time she steps on the field. These small, consistent actions ground her before every game, creating a sense of focus and calm. For Elena, it’s not just about superstition—it’s about feeling connected to her team, her field, and the game she loves. Win or lose, those rituals remind her why she plays.

Hi! My name is Myonna, and I’m a freshman at Herron High School. Starting high school has been a big change, but I’m excited to be here and figure it all out along the way. I’m someone who likes to stay busy, whether it’s keeping up with classes, meeting new people, or being involved in activities. I play softball and it’s taught me a lot about teamwork, confidence, and how to stay calm under pressure. And while it’s a big part of my life, it’s not the only thing that defines me. I love being active, spending time with friends, and finding new music or shows to obsess over and trying new foods. I try to be the kind of person who brings positivity to whatever room I walk into, even if it’s just a smile. This year, I’m working on staying organized, building confidence, and figuring out what I enjoy most about high school life. I believe it’s important to try new things and step out of your comfort zone, even when it is scary. Whether I’m on the field or in the classroom, I just want to do my best, learn from my mistakes, and enjoy the ride.
