Artemis Mission – The Return to the Moon

Introduction

On April 1st, 2026, the Orion spacecraft launched its first crewed mission, known as Artemis II. This launch was the second part of the Artemis Program, which is an attempt to get humans back to the moon for the first time since 1972’s Apollo 17.
On April 11th, the mission successfully returned to earth with everyone alive, making the mission a success.

The Artemis Mission

As was stated, this is the second part of the five part Artemis program, which aims to put humans back on the moon. It also entails the beginning stages of construction of a moon base by NASA.
The mission’s first launch was in November of 2022, and the mission is planned to have its last launch in late 2028. The goals of the launches build on each other, eventually culminating in 2 lunar landings, and starting on building a moon base.

Artemis I

Artemis I launched on November 16, 2022, and returned on December 11th, 2026. It was an un-crewed test of the flight systems of the Orion rocket, which is the main rocket used in the Artemis Program. It was mostly a success, though issues were detected with the heat shield. However, finding issues like these was the goal of the mission, which means that finding this heat shield issue was a success.

Artemis II

Artemis II‘s launch, as was said, was on April 1st of 2026, after quite a few delays, and it had its splashdown on April 11th of 2026. It was the first crewed flight of the Orion rocket, and its goal was to do a flyby around the moon. It was the first American mission to go to the backside of the moon, meaning it went the farthest from earth out of any NASA space mission ever launched. It was successful, as the rocket worked properly after the launch, and all of the Astronauts successfully returned to the Earth.

Artemis III and the future.

Artemis III is planned to launch in Mid-2027, as a crewed test of low earth orbit test of the human land system. As it tests landing systems, III will be a very important mission.
As for the future, there are also planned launches for Artemis IV and Artemis V, which will be the lunar landing missions. These are the final stages of the mission, and help with the ultimate goal of landing on the moon again, and establishing the moon base.

Overall

The future of the Artemis mission is incredibly important, and if it succeeds, it could be a point of pride.
Many people will look to the future, waiting to see the mission unfold.

I am a 9th grade journalism student, who has only done yearbook for one year (duh). It has been quite an experience, from creating the book, to helping review and submit it.
Apart from journalism, I enjoy my Math (Algebra 2) and Science (Physics) classes. I really enjoy doing math and science and hop to go into computer science, specifically programming.
Outside of classes, I’ve mainly been in 2 clubs this year, and 1 sport. The two clubs were Quiz bowl and Mock Trial. Quiz bowl is quite a fun club, and I learn a lot from it. Mock Trial is fun because I love learning about laws as well.
The sport I was in was Tennis, which is by far my favorite sport to play. Tennis is a very good sport for me to be active, since it requires a good balance of a lot of things.
Outside of Tennis, other activities I enjoy are swimming (which I don’t do often) and playing video games. (I play Minecraft and various Switch games)
