AP 3D Art: A Journey of Creative Self Growth

As a senior at Herron with a strong passion for art, I have selected art classes for electives each year. I have taken a variety of courses, from introductory classes to photography and sculpture, and now I am enrolled in AP 3D art. During this school year, I have had the opportunity to express and expand my creativity through sculptures. Unlike other AP classes, the exam for this class consists of creating a portfolio. Before diving into the portfolio you must create an inquiry. This serves as a way of exploring ideas through art. An inquiry is the foundation of the portfolio and all the artwork produced. With this class I was able to grow my artistic skills and thinking.

In this class we need to create multiple artworks, typically over the course of two weeks. This was quite a challenge for me, as there were times when I struggled to come up with ideas that matched my artistic skills. Constantly generating new ideas was very stressful. I put a lot of effort into brainstorming each project. I have to utilize my resources such as Pinterest and discuss ideas with Mr. Renwick, the teacher for AP Art this year.

Exploring new ideas beyond my own skill set has greatly improved my creativity. A key aspect of creating a portfolio is demonstrating my growth. Although I didn’t enjoy some of the projects I completed, I appreciated the personal development they provided.

What I have enjoyed the most is creating art. Art has always been my outlet, allowing me to explore different mediums. This class does require time outside of class to achieve the best results. Although it can sometimes feel like homework, I find that art has always been enjoyable and therapeutic for me.

My advice for joining AP Art is to ensure that you are prepared to dedicate a significant amount of time to building and creating a portfolio. It’s also important not to push yourself to the point of burnout. If you are looking for a way to grow as an artist and challenge your limits, AP Art is worth considering. Additionally, be sure to complete all the prerequisite classes needed to enroll; while it may take time, so does the process of creating art!

Currently, I am working on my final project and reflecting on all my previous experiences and personal growth. The challenges I have faced pushed me out of my creative comfort zone. This class has been a wonderful way to conclude my high school journey in a creative manner!
