Senior Highlight: Colin Nix’s dedication to his internship

Colin Nix is a senior at Herron High School who, since the beginning of the school year, has been working tirelessly at his internship at the Indiana Statehouse every B1 and B2 class period. He works in the Tour Office, where, as the name suggests, he serves as a tour guide for the building.

Colin chose to intern at the Statehouse because it was the closest opportunity available to the psychology field. Since he had already given tours of the school, he thought his prior experience as a tour guide would be helpful. He learned about this internship opportunity through Ms. Wek, who recommended it to him.

When asked to describe the workload, Colin said it is pretty manageable. He explained that it isn’t necessarily hard, but it does require effort and dedication. His advice for balancing the internship with schoolwork is to stay grounded in your academics. He did mention, however, that the only downside he has encountered is that he can’t participate in Spirit Weeks during his internship days unless he changes clothes midday.

Colin shared with our staff that his experience interning has been amazing. He loves seeing all the various government departments in action. He highly recommends interning, specifically at the Statehouse, “1000%.” When asked if he would do it again if he could redo his senior year, he enthusiastically said yes.

Outside of his internship, Colin participates in many extracurricular activities. These include Ethics Bowl, where students analyze and discuss real-life ethical dilemmas; Mock Trial, where students take on the roles of attorneys and witnesses in a simulated trial; the Herron Baseball team, where he serves as team captain; National Honor Society, an organization that recognizes students for their achievements in scholarship, service, leadership, and character; and Herron HYPE, an organization that selects valuable players from each sport to represent their team.

My name is Haylee Purrington, and I am currently a Senior at Herron High School. Over the past few years, I have had the privilege of being a dedicated member of the Yearbook Staff, starting in my Junior year. This year, I’ve taken on the role of Editor In Chief and Social Media Manager, where I’ve enjoyed leading our team and helping shape the yearbook into something memorable for our school community. My favorite aspect of being on the Yearbook Staff has been capturing the special moments of our school events through photography, as well as managing and creating posts for our social media platforms to keep everyone engaged and informed. Collaborating with my fellow editors and section heads has made this year a particularly rewarding experience, and I’m grateful for the friendships I’ve formed along the way. Beyond yearbook, I am actively involved in several other extracurriculars, including Mock Trial, National Honor Society, and the Recycling Committee in Achaean 80. I’ve also participated in Pop Music Club, Riley Dance Marathon, and Craft Club in the past. In my free time, I love to roller-skate and engage in various crafting projects. After graduation, I plan to attend Indiana State University and pursue a Juris Doctor degree, with the goal of becoming an attorney. I am excited about the opportunities ahead and look forward to continuing my academic and extracurricular growth in college.
