The Power of Teen Voices: A Shift That Could Redefine Democracy if We Could Vote at 16

When it comes to being young, we as students should be able to understand what’s going on with politics and have our own opinion without feeling like what we are saying is wrong. I feel like it would impact us as teens, open up our eyes, and show us a different perspective. I could change it significantly because this generation has unique perspectives and priorities. We could show different concerns, and we would focus on other issues that could help us and the world, starting off with education funding, environmental policies, and youth opinion. I feel like we could overall alter the turnout rates and influence candidates, and the right political party gains more traction. We would have the right person in the house who cares for the right things.

I interviewed 5 students and asked them, “Do you think that if they made the voting age 16, it would impact the world differently?”

London Thomas (10th) said: “I think it would because the younger generation has stronger views on the world’s problems, and we would want more changes.”

Malia Crowdus (11th) replied : “I think it would because every vote matters and all voices need to be heard.”

Amelia Burrough (10th) added : “I think that it would because all votes matter and it’s important to stand for what you believe.”

Chloe Suttice (12th) stated : “I think that it would have a bigger impact on the world since today’s youth is more knowledgeable about politics and the world than previous generations.”

Zayra Medina (10th) commented : “I think that it would impact the world because I fully think that each and every vote matters.”

Hello, my name is Akira. I am a freshman, and this is my first semester in the yearbook and it has been awesome! I joined the yearbook to meet new people and try new things. My catalog sections are portraits and clubs. I’ve only been doing it for one semester, but I hope to return and do the same thing next year. What I do best is interviewing people and taking pictures. I think so because I enjoy getting to know people and learning about them, and I’ve always loved taking photos. What I enjoy most about being at Herron are the extracurricular activities we can do both in and out of school. One of my interests is photography class. I also enjoy learning new math and being part of the home economics club. Some of my hobbies are baking and cooking, which I really love. I also want to get into ceramics because I love pottery. Watching movies, and I enjoy being able to help others. I don’t really have a favorite teacher yet since it’s my first year, but if I had to choose, it would probably be Miss Gillis because she is super helpful her classes are super relaxed so she would have to be my favorite.
